Inspired by the image of an open book, the New Taipei City Library Second Main Branch symbolizes both the unfolding of knowledge and the welcoming of public participation. Located on a street corner adjacent to a school and residential blocks, the design responds to its urban context with a friendly, human-scaled form. Soft, flowing curves shape the exterior, blending the building into the neighborhood while creating an inviting presence.
The library is envisioned as a “living room for the city,” with a outdoor steps at the corner entrance that connect surrounding commercial spaces and public areas. This design invites people to enter or stay, extending the library’s role beyond a traditional learning space into a part of everyday civic life.
Inside, large open floorplates and transparent layouts encourage free movement and interaction. Natural light fills the spaces, while stepped platforms support flexible reading, discussion, and public events. The children’s area is layered by age group, and seamlessly integrated with a reading zone for seniors, creating an inclusive environment that fosters intergenerational exchange.
