Located in the northwestern tip of Taiwan, on the north bank of the lower side of the Tamsui River, on the west front of the Dagu Mountain Group, across the river of Guanyin Mountain. It is a place full of history and it has gradually developed since it is so well connected (via metro) to the city of Taipei.
Tamsui Arts Workshop is designed intentionally to attract people’s attention and to invite them in. The building acts as a social incubator formally welcoming its visitors inside the open multi-functional space. The space fuels creativity and is an opportunity to freely express oneself.
The site for the Art Gallery is located in the back part of Zhongzheng Road, making it a bigger challenge to design a building which would attract people inside. Besides, the site had originally an official residence during the Japanese occupation period. We would like to create a dialogue between the surrounding context and the new building in the spirit of this historical significance. Therefore, the tiles from the demolition of the original building were preserved and used for interior decoration of the new building.
To respect the surrounding environment, the building is intentionally set back, it was avoided blocking the rear view, and is encouraged to let people in the square to see the mountain view in order to create a unique building skyline and a new look to the old street.
Multi-purpose interior space is suitable to receive different activities, opening the building to the square. Plus, small lecture spaces and special art exhibitions, provide a platform for creators to publish.
